Fast paced action for Snowboard and Ski Cross Continental Cups

Lake Wanaka, 19 September 2012 – Top snow sports athletes were treated to bluebird skies and not a breath of wind allowing fast and thrilling racing for the Snowboard and Ski Cross FIS ANC Continental Cups at Cardrona Alpine Resort this week.

Two rounds of the competition were staged this week. In today’s snowboard cross competition Hagen Kearney (USA) was the first across the line in the finals followed by fellow country man Trevor Jacob and Andrew Fisher (AUS) in third. Russian athlete Olyunin Nicolay topped the podium yesterday with Australians Bolton Cameron second and Andrew Fisher clinching third again.

Achieving the double Belle Brockhoff (AUS) crossed the line first in both days’ competition. Jekova Alexandra (BUL) took second place and Hernandez Jacqueline USA third in yesterday’s competition. Second and third was secured by different female athletes in today’s competition Anastasia Asanova (RUS) and Karen Koybashi (USA).

Members of the New Zealand snowboard team performed well, Cody Logan doubled his FIS points with strong performances, Duncan Campbell (15 years) placed 26th yesterday in his first ever FIS competition, as well as two New Zealand adaptive athletes Carl Murphy and Byron Raubenheimer competing.

In the skier cross competition New Zealand’s Jamie Preble and Angus Rose took first and second respectively, Craig Robinson (GBR) rounded out the podium. There were no female entrants in the skier cross field.

Director of Coach & Sport Development, Adam Dooney was pleased with the quality field for the Continental Cup, “The two days of competition have been incredibly successful, the athletes and course were in top condition. The athletes are already looking forward to returning next year for Winter Games 2013 and to train in the region,” he said.

Today’s competition concludes the Snowboard Cross ANC with Australia’s Andrew Fischer and Belle Brockhoff topping the table and winning the Cup. Both events in the series were staged this week due to adverse weather cancelling the Australian events.

Nine nations were represented in the men's snowboard field with 30 riders competing.

A joint initiative between Winter Games NZ and Cardrona Alpine Resort, the course was purpose built and shaped by Anders Forsell (SWE) for a snowboard and skier cross training camp held during the past two weeks and as the course for next year’s Snowboard Cross World Cup which will feature on the Winter Games NZ schedule.
