NZRL Monday Night Footy Results - Round 5
It was a very tough night for Aorere College in their U85kg Secondary Schools clash against Southern Cross Campus. Southern Cross jumped out to an early lead and had Aorere going backwards for most of the game, not only in attack but also with their fierce defense. It was 26 - nil to Southern Cross by half time despite Aorere getting the ball to bounce out from the kick-off forcing a line drop out. However, Southern Cross not only defended their line but also managed to get down field, force a tight head from a scrum and go on to score in the next move.
Aorere fought back early in the second half scoring two tries and bringing it back to a more respectable 32 points to 10 before Southern Cross regained the upper hand, and in the process of scoring three further tries, forced their own line drop out from a kick-off, and finished 46 -10 winners. It was a very complete performance from Southern Cross Campus with seven players scoring nine tries between them and no doubt their large group of supporters would have been very pleased they'd come along.
Round Five of the Pirtek National Premiership featured the Counties Manukau Stingrays and the Northern Swords and it was always going to be difficult for the Swords who have yet to get a win this season. The Stingrays scored first but to their credit the Swords then managed a period of sustained attacking pressure, but unfortunately they simply weren't able to convert the possession into points. As so often happens in league, a failure to score after such a period can quickly turn against a team, and so it was for the Swords with the Stingrays scoring back to back tries and then going on to lead 36 - nil at half time.
After the break things didn't improve for the Swords, and before long it was all one way traffic with the Stingrays scoring tries up the middle and on the edges taking the final score to 88 - 0. A number of Stingrays players impressed including fullback Honeti Tuha and goal kicker and no. 7 Leroy Fa'avesi, while young Jaydenn Bentley-Hape made some good metres for the Swords on attack.
Once again a big thank you to everyone who helps to make this happen and to everyone watching at home on TV.
