Body Art Showcase 2012 - Winners from this weekend
In 2011, she earned the “Best Emerging Artist”
award; one year later, Sofia Bue Pedersen is the “Supreme
Award Winner” at the 2012 NZ Body Art Showcase, held this
past Saturday at the Bruce Mason Centre.
Pedersen’s entry, a big-eyed, purple alien, earned her the most prestigious award of the 2012 event alongside the Weta Workshop SPFX Fantasy Award. Pedersen wasn’t the only double-award winner during the evening however; Cynthia Gascogine, Myrtha Heydenrijk and Kim Boyd boasted dual wins on Saturday.
They were joined by Julian Bartram, Aimee Waterhouse-Fitch, Hayley Tamaka, Allison Millair and Alex Hansen, each picking up an award in their respective categories (a full list of winners can be seen below).
As the Body Art event returned to the North Shore after last year’s expedition to Auckland CBD, the event was one of the tightest showcases in recent years, with an excellent selection of music with live band Starboy setting the future theme with amazing lighting effects exciting the near-capacity crowd.
Indeed, such was the quality of this year’s showcase that Tim Gratton, one of the international judges in attendance on Saturday (who has twice judged at the world championships) stated that “the artistic work is comparable, even better than what I have seen at the world championships.” He believes this is the only body art showcase in the world and should be copied.
Creative Director Mem Bourke was elated with Saturday’s proceedings, saying “I am overwhelmed at the high standard of art and the tremendous support by sponsors and volunteers ensure that this event was such a success. It was wonderful to be back on the North Shore of Auckland, the home of the NZ Body Art Awards.”
Executive Producer Jonathan Smith was also impressed with this year’s event, having produced the awards for a number of years now. “I believe our audience was delighted with what they experienced. I have no doubt that we exceeded their expectations with the delivery of a tight, well scripted show full of colour, flavour and surprises”
Smith wasted no time also in revealing plans for next year’s occasion; “We are looking forward to presenting the 2013 Body Art Showcase, themed on 'The Circus'”
