Local Photographer Wins at National Awards
Cromwell photographer Janyne Fletcher (previously Janyne Harman) was a finalist in the Photo Journalism category at the prestigious National Iris Photography Awards held in Christchurch on 24 September. Ms Fletcher also received silver and two bronze medals at these awards.
“Even though I had worked hard to do well at the awards it was a huge surprise to be a category finalist as the standard of work is incredibly high. These awards really challenge how I think about and view photography. Being part of the Iris awards and the working with the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers is a vital part of my professional learning and development” said Ms Fletcher.
The award-winning portfolio and photographs were a series of landscape and photo journalistic style images from around Central Otago and the South Island. The Silver award was for an image of hungry sheep breaking through a fence at Moa Creek in search of food. “I was driving back from taking pictures at Moa Creek when I spotted these sheep “making a break for it”. I had very little time to capture the image but the sheep posed beautifully and the lighting was perfect so I had to be quick!”
The Epson/New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) Awards attract hundreds of entries from around the country and overseas each year. The awards are highly contested and coveted as they have helped launch and establish many careers.
All the entries are judged anonymously over three days by a panel of judges who include some of the most qualified and renowned local and international photographers.
“The awards give photographers an opportunity to push the boundaries, and to see how their work is judged against the rest of the industry,” said NZIPP President Mike Langford. “As a result, the bar keeps getting raised higher and higher and this year was no exception.”
