Hiley and Price take national honours on day three

The New Zealand Schools Road Cycling Championships wrapped up in gusty conditions today with points races at the Manfeild Auto Course in Manawatu.

Devon Hiley (St Cuthbert’s College) broke away early in the 24km women’s under-20 points race and stayed away to win every sprint contest and a national title.

“It was a tough race but I had a few of the girls working to keep the bunch together and help me stay out front so that was good,” said Hiley.

“I’d figured out after winning the first three sprints that I could sit up [and still win] but the guy on the motorbike kept saying ‘don’t give up now, you’re 44secs ahead’ so I pushed it hard all the way to the end.”

“I didn’t expect to win; I was hoping for a medal so this [winning] is so nice; I’m quite proud actually.”

It was a tough day for riders across all 12 age-grades as a howling wing made life on the bike very difficult.

“It was windy which was pretty difficult but thankfully all the supporters were on the home straight where we were into the headwind so that made it easier,” said Hiley.

The 39km under-20 men’s points race was a tighter affair with just five points separating the top three riders. Corby Price (Hamilton Boys HS) was crowned national champion on the back of wins in the first and fourth sprints.

“I didn’t even realise I was in contention to win while I was riding, but I hoped to be on the podium,” said Price.

“I generally leave the first sprint because it tends to be the most heated but I got in a good position and just went for it.

“It was quite a surprise to win as a ‘first-year’ really. I hoped to do well, but I definitely didn’t expect to have the sort of weekend we’ve had down here.”

This win makes it two national titles in three days for the year 12 student after he was involved in Hamilton Boys’ record breaking team time trial on Saturday. He also narrowly missed out in yesterday’s road race, finishing second to Callum Saunders (Marlborough Boys College).

This concludes the New Zealand Schools Road Cycling Championships which, with over 30 new national champions, will have a few riders leaving Manawatu smiling.
