WOMAD Give One NZ Band The Chance Of A Lifetime

WOMAD Give One NZ Band The Chance Of A Lifetime

New Zealand’s Got Talent – not just the title of a local TV show but a reality that organisers of WOMAD 2013 have been quick to pick up on.
Today WOMAD NZ are launching their first ever country-wide search
for a new and exciting New Zealand band.

Decided by the New Zealand public, the winning band will play at the festival on Sunday 17 March alongside some of the world’s best musical talent.

WOMAD always includes New Zealand bands in its line ups but this competition offers a rare chance to an up and coming band to showcase their musical talents to a diverse and appreciative audience.

Artistic director Drew James said: “We would like to give something back to the country that has held such a world renowned festival by giving an opportunity to a New Zealand talent to showcase their music on stage in front of thousands whilst rubbing shoulders with stars from across the world. This is really a once in a life time opportunity for the winning band.”

Bands are invited to nominate themselves from today by submitting an audio track or video onto the WOMAD website. WOMAD NZ then uploads the info, and anyone and everyone who wants to vote does so. Voting closes Wednesday 12 December at 5.00pm and the winner announced the following day. In addition to playing WOMAD on Sunday 17 March 2013, the winning band also receives accommodation and $1,000 towards travel costs.

“WOMAD 2013 is shaping up to be one of the best, and we are glad to bring one lucky band along for the ride!” Drew James said.

Full terms and conditions are available on the official WOMAD NZ website www.womad.co.nz.

Last week, WOMAD subscribers had first bite at discounted early-bird tickets to the three day festival, and with the preview line up announcement of trumpeting legend Hugh Masekela, reggae superstar Jimmy Cliff, and Americana meets Chinese culture banjo slinging Abigail Washburn, tickets have sold very quickly. There are a very limited number of early-bird tickets now on sale to the general public from Ticketek or online at www.ticketek.co.nz. But once they are gone, they are gone!

Bringing new sounds and experiences from all over the world, WOMAD New Zealand 2013 takes place at New Plymouth’s Brooklands Park and TSB Bowl of Brooklands from 15 to 17 March.

WOMAD is an international festival created by Peter Gabriel and Thomas Brooman in 1982. Since then 21 countries have hosted the festival and entertained millions of festival goers.
