Senior Women’s cricket gets off the ground

The local senior women’s competition got off to a flying start on Saturday, with Onslow winning against Hutt playing at Wellington Girls College. Hutt Districts batted first scoring 92 but was chased down by Onslow in the 16th over. Suzie McDonald led the way with 40* and was supported well by youngster Floss Marshall. Onslow captain and former Blaze great Amanda Cooper was pleased with her sides win. “With Lucy Doolan playing we knew it was going to be tough, but the young girls like Floss and Rosemary Cockle really showed that we have some talent in the region”.

In the second game, Johnsonville batted first against Collegians, getting 201-1 off 20 overs. Thamsyn Newtown, of Johnsonville, scored an impressive 104 achieving her maiden century and showing the talent she has. Hannah Lee-Harwood also scored an impressive 68*. It should have been enough for Johnsonville, however Irish born Eimeer Richardson plundered the Johnsonville attack to score 130* with Blaze player Allex Evans supporting the coach with 52*. Collegians got the total without losing a wicket. Richardson described her day as of “Real value and a great boost for the team considering the huge total we were chasing”. Johnsonville captain Michelle Bunkall had no answers “Eimear was fantastic, I had no answers and could not stop the flow of runs”

This week sees Collegians playing Onslow and Hutt Districts take on Johnsonville. All games are being played at the Petone Rec.
