Māori Language Awards Winners Announced
The winners of the Māori Language Awards 2012 have been announced at Tauranga.
The
highest community award was presented to Te Reo Māori
Society and Ngā Tamatoa on the 40th anniversary of the
Māori Language Petition being presented to Parliament.
The award for Māori language leadership was presented to Dr Cathy Dewes of Rotorua.
The range of Awards
presented celebrate local community support led by kura,
schools, businesses etc. for te reo Māori, and also
identify leadership for te reo stretching over decades.
“We are impressed by the diverse ways in which
our entrants have contributed to the health and vitality of
te reo in their communities,” says Chief Executive, Glenis
Philip-Barbara.
“It is a privilege to acknowledge and celebrate pioneers and activists of te reo Māori tonight.”
“Our community Awards winners embody a
huge range of achievement for the benefit of te reo in the
past 40 years.”
Commendations
The Award judges commended Kerikeri High School whose entry was characterised by the grit of a small group of rangatahi who drove a series of MLW activities. The students conducted a community needs analysis and even won the right to present their findings to a conference in the United States.
Another
commendation was made to Vodafone and Hika Group for their
Māori language i-phone app. Over 38,000 customers
downloaded the app for free during Māori Language Week
2012.
