Māori Language Awards Winners Announced

The winners of the Māori Language Awards 2012 have been announced at Tauranga.

The highest community award was presented to Te Reo Māori Society and Ngā Tamatoa on the 40th anniversary of the Māori Language Petition being presented to Parliament.

The award for Māori language leadership was presented to Dr Cathy Dewes of Rotorua.

The range of Awards presented celebrate local community support led by kura, schools, businesses etc. for te reo Māori, and also identify leadership for te reo stretching over decades.

“We are impressed by the diverse ways in which our entrants have contributed to the health and vitality of te reo in their communities,” says Chief Executive, Glenis Philip-Barbara.

“It is a privilege to acknowledge and celebrate pioneers and activists of te reo Māori tonight.”

“Our community Awards winners embody a huge range of achievement for the benefit of te reo in the past 40 years.”

Commendations

The Award judges commended Kerikeri High School whose entry was characterised by the grit of a small group of rangatahi who drove a series of MLW activities. The students conducted a community needs analysis and even won the right to present their findings to a conference in the United States.

Another commendation was made to Vodafone and Hika Group for their Māori language i-phone app. Over 38,000 customers downloaded the app for free during Māori Language Week 2012.
