Victorian High Tea at the Gallery
Victorian High Tea at the Gallery
The eagerly awaited Haunts of Dickens exhibition opened at the Gallery on Saturday. The exhibition celebrates the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’s birth (7 February 1812). It features a series of delightful watercolours by the British artist Paul Braddon (1864-1937) given to the Dunedin Public Library by well-known New Zealand literary figure A. H. Reed in 1956. Braddon has illustrated scenes from many of Dickens’ novels - including Pickwick Papers, The Old Curiosity Shop, David Copperfield, Great Expectations as well as the unfinished Edwin Drood.
In conjunction with the Haunts of Dickens exhibition the Gallery is hosting a variety of public programmes over the summer period to complement and enhance the works on display. This Wednesday at 2:00pm Dr Jane Malthus dress historian will be at the Gallery to discus Dickensian attire. Examples of Victorian dress will be on display, along with a beautiful high tea for all to enjoy. Visitors are welcome to dress up if they would like, gold coin entry.
