Definition of Me
Definition of a good
play
Definition of Me, a play devised
by local students, premieres as part of the New Zealand
Fringe Festival on 4th March. Definition of Me is
written and performed by Alexander Sparrow, Stevie
Hancox-Monk, George Fenn and Charlie Pleasants . Sparrow and
Hancox-Monk have both performed at the Globe Theatre in
London as part of SGCNZ YSC; Sparrow in 2011 and Hancox-Monk
in 2012. Definition of Me follows four people through
their lives from childhood to old age and everything in
between. Sparrow said, “It was an experiment – to cover
four life spans is challenging. The end product is theatre
that covers heartbreak, comedy, illness and everything that
encompasses humanity.”
Performed in a flat, the intimate setting works well with the personal nature of Definition of Me – some of the script was inspired by the performers’ lives. “Improvising scenes as the start could be either uplifting or upsetting. People can relate to this because it’s what life is like,” said Sparrow, “and we want people to see life through the eyes of others.”
