Maori Television to Broadcast in Australia

1 March 2013

Maori Television to Broadcast in Australia

From Sunday 3 March, New Zealanders living in Australia will be able to watch TE KAEA, Maori Television’s flagship news programme every Sunday at 6pm on National Indigenous Television (NITV).

NITV, part of the SBS family of channels in Australia, launched free-to-air in December 2012, attracting over 2.7 million viewers in their first month. They are already broadcasting popular Maori Television programmes HUNTING AOTEAROA and TANGAROA WITH PIO.

With the latest figures showing approximately 140,000 Maori and over 800,000 New Zealanders overall living across the ditch, chief executive Jim Mather said it is becoming increasingly important for Maori Television to broadcast programmes in Australia.

“With such large numbers of Maori and other Kiwis living in Australia, we are committed to remaining connected to them through this partnership with NITV. We also plan to offer more Maori Television programmes to showcase our language and culture to NITV’s rapidly growing audience”.

As members of the World Indigenous Television Broadcast Network (WITBN), Maori Television and NITV enjoy a strong collaborative relationship. NITV channel manager Tanya Denning says: “We are proud to be able to feature local and national stories from the reporting team at Te Kaea and we look forward to developing this connection further.”
