The Roxy cooks up culinary classics for film festival
Wellingtonians are in for a treat the week of Monday 1 April as The Roxy puts on a series of exclusive meals matched to classic films.
The Roxy Cinema Classic Film Festival, being held from 1–7 April, marks the iconic cinema’s second birthday, and showcases the culinary creativity of the Coco at the Roxy restaurant team.
Head Chef Nic Spicer has put together a veritable feast of flavours matched to several of the iconic films on show within the film festival.
To celebrate the screening of Forbidden Planet, a landmark science-fiction film based on Shakepeare’s The Tempest, Nic has developed the ‘Forbidden (dessert) Platter’, which includes white chocolate clusters, orange ‘ash’, and coffee-flavoured meringue.
“This movie match has been quite a challenge. The tones of the movie are very grey, with a hint of orange, which is not very edible, but we’ve got creative and have developed a very tasty dish,” says Nic.
“The base of the dessert builds on the landscape of ‘Altair IV’ (the planet in the film), with white chocolate-milk crumb rocks and a scatter of orange ‘ash’. We have recreated the space ship C57-D using a sphere of coffee-flavoured Italian meringue, slotted into a disk of cardamom-spiced tuille. The dish is finished off with a depiction of Robby the Robot’s helmet (easily the most iconic part of the film), which is a two-tone chocolate Panna Cotta dome topped with coconut Bavarian cream.”
For Breakfast at Tiffany’s (screening as part of The Roxy’s Heels & Reels ladies’ night on Thursday 4 April) Coco at the Roxy will be offering on a selection classic 1960s-style canapés including mini-prawn cocktails, silver dollar hamburgers, and melon balls filled with sherbet.
For The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Bollywood films Special Chabbis, and Kahaani, CoCo at The Roxy will be serving authentic Indian snacks such as curry puffs and samosas.
“The Roxy Cinema Classic Film Festival has something for everyone. It’s our way of thanking our loyal supporters, and encouraging other Wellingtonians, and visitors to stop by and enjoy a part of film history at The Roxy Cinema, and excellent food at Coco at the Roxy,” says Nic.
