Nominations open for Wellington Sportsperson of the Year

Nominations are now open for The Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards 2013

Nominations are now open for The Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards 2013. The awards are organised by Sport Wellington, and the awards ceremony is one of the most prestigious events on the Wellington sporting calendar. The ceremony will be held at the Wellington Town Hall on Thursday 13 June. Now in their 44th year the awards seek to celebrate excellence in Wellington sport.

Sport Wellington welcomes nominations from the general public, sports organisations and the media in the following 13 categories:

Sportsman, Sportswoman, Coach, Team, Disabled Athlete, Personality, Emerging Sportsman and Emerging Sportswoman, Club Team, Administrator, Volunteer, Official and Lifetime Achievement.

The supreme award of Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year 2013 is chosen from all category winners, apart from Personality of the Year and Lifetime Achievement. Last year Conrad Smith took the top honours on the back of a solid Rugby World Cup performance. The achievement period for the 2013 awards runs from April 10 2012 to April 1 2013.

The awards ceremony will once again see the induction of three new Legends of Wellington Sport who, once inducted, will have plaques honouring their achievements installed at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie.

Sport Wellington’s Event Manager Craig Ireson says that “the Olympics and Paralympics will no doubt feature in the awards with Wellingtonians Peter Taylor and Mary Fisher picking up medals in London, and, as always, emerging sports such as Orienteering and Roller Derby will be well represented in the nominations. Other likely contenders will be the Black Socks Captain Rhys Casley who hit the three run homer to clinch the 2013 World Championship title, and the Wellington surf lifesavers Tash Hind and Sam Lee who helped New Zealand pick up the 2012 World Lifesaving championship” Ireson says.

“However, as an independent organisation Sport Wellington cannot nominate so we are reliant on the general public, media, sports organisations and clubs to recognise their champions and stalwarts by nominating them in the awards. Like all awards you have to be in to win” says Ireson.

Anyone can nominate at www.wellingtonsportsawards.co.nz or join the debate on Twitter by following @SportWgtn or using the hashtag #DomPostSportsAwards. Nominations close on Friday 26 April and finalists are announced on 17 May in The Dominion Post.
