Forecast rain delays Koutu Youth Space opening day
Heavy rain forecast for Rotorua has resulted in the planned opening of Rotorua District Council's Koutu Youth Space being postponed by three weeks.
The official opening of the new youth space at Karenga Park was scheduled for Sunday 21 April, however the event has been rescheduled to Sunday 12 May due to a wet weather forecast.
RDC youth projects officer Jill Campbell said various community members and community groups had been involved in planning the day's events.
"The Koutu community has come onboard to ensure the opening day is a fun and successful event. They’ve been actively involved from the get-go because they recognise the youth space as a positive addition to the area."
The Koutu Youth Space features a skateboard and scooter facility, as well as a netball/basketball court.
Mrs Campbell said the development of Karenga Park had involved a phased approach.
"In Phase 1, fill was put onto the site to help raise soil levels as drainage has always been an issue here being lower than lake levels. Phase 2 involved the development and completion of the skatepark and scooter feature, and the courts. And Phase 3 will include safety lighting and a whanau barbecue space, while a grassed sports field is planned for later in the year."
The official opening of the Koutu Youth Space will now take place on Sunday 12 May from 11am to 2pm at Karenga Park.
