Victoria League Marks 100 Years

30 April 2013

Victoria League Marks 100 Years

The Victoria League for Commonwealth Friendship in Canterbury first met in Te Koraha, now the office of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, in May 1910. To commemorate this first meeting and celebrate their first 100 years, the Victoria League will have an official tree planting ceremony on Wednesday 1 May at Rangi Ruru.

The tree is being donated by the Victoria League, to mark their first meeting when Te Koraha was the home of Mr and Mrs Rhodes.

Victoria League President, Garry Thompson says “The Victoria League regards Te Koraha as its birthplace, and believes it is the most appropriate place to have a public memorial to the contribution the League has made in service to its community”.

“We are delighted to celebrate this important milestone with the League and we congratulate them on this achievement.” says Rangi Ruru Principal, Julie Moor. “The school has always taken an active role in the Canterbury community and it’s significant to be able to record the involvement with the League by the planting of this tree, particularly at this time when it will be the first planting as part of the Rangi campus re-development.” Ms Moor says.

Nowadays the League supports research into British Commonwealth studies through grants-in-aid related to research and through prizes for the best senior undergraduate students in History at the University of Canterbury. They also make donations to charities that support the less fortunate in our community.
