Introduction

This book, edited by Laura Preston and designed by Nuno da Luz, is an introduction to New Zealand-born artist Michael Stevenson. It is the first extensive publication on his practice, spanning close to thirty years of art production, and was developed on the occasion of the artist's concurrent exhibitions at Portikus, Frankfurt, and Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City.
It is through the lens of different authors, all of whom share a long-standing affinity with the work of Michael Stevenson, that this volume of images, new writing and re-printed texts from the artist’s archive has been brought together. Michael Taussig presents a geopolitical view on the relationship between history and place. Jan Verwoert gives insight into the artist’s methodology and offers an account of the practice related to economic systems. Mark von Schlegell has contributed a parallel text in the science-fiction genre entitled 'Pan-Atlantis', and Marilyn Strathern’s lecture from 2005 further contributes to the artist’s fascination with the connectedness of things. A writing project between Stevenson and Giovanni Intra, re-discovered in the artist's archive, is also included along with reprinted texts by Roberto Bolaño Ávalos and José de Jesús Martínez. Together with a comprehensive image selection as well as a visual essay especially compiled by the artist, this book gives rare insight into Michael Stevenson’s complex oeuvre.
