Kofoed ecstatic with ‘unreal’ Cogent Cup announcement
Young V8 Challenge Cup driver, Jack Kofoed says he is speechless following the announcement of the 2013 Cogent Cup prize fund by series organisers.
The V8 Challenge Cup earlier this week confirmed a new series sponsor in Cogent Telecommunications and with it a massive $20,000 prize fund that will be shared amongst the drivers. With $10,000 awarded to the top scoring driver, $6000 to second and $4000 to third.
“This has to be some of the best news for the category since its formation. It’s huge. For young drivers such as myself who don’t have much financial backing, putting together a drive in a national race series is a massive challenge. We need every little bit of help and support to ensure that we are on the grid.” said the young driver.
“It's been tough for anyone running a TL car in NZ in recent times but thanks to the efforts of the series' experienced organisers we now have a category which is now firmly the best choice for any TL drivers wanting to showcase their talents in front of some of motorsport’s biggest names or secure the biggest bang for bucks for their sponsors.” Kofoed explained.
The V8 Challenge Cup consists of schedule TL cars more commonly known amongst the fans as NZV8s and all are either Ford or Holden chassis with a carburetted V8 producing over 420 horsepower. These spec cars were top of the pile of New Zealand Touring Car Racing until 2011, reaching speeds of over 240kph at some tracks.
"There's no doubt about it, the schedule TL car is still a very serious piece of kit," added Kofoed. “The cars are very challenging to drive but a huge amount of fun.”
“It’s a surreal feeling for myself, lining up on the grid at the BNT V8 SuperTourer events. Only a couple of years ago, I was in the stands watching my childhood heroes like Kayne Scott, Craig Baird and John McIntyre racing these very cars. It’s hard to put into words the buzz I get now when I am racing in front of such big names especially as I’m actually driving Kayne Scott’s very car!
“I cannot wait to get out there at Pukekohe later this month and fight hard for the Cogent Cup - it's the biggest single boost for TL cars I can remember.”
Young Kofoed currently sits in fourth place in the V8 Challenge Cup championship - proudly supported by Total Access, Sabelt, Point 2 Point, Mobil 1, NZ Performance Tuning and OS Motorsport Preparation.
