I AM EVANGELINE
A Jonathan Roper and
Christine Rogers film.
Featuring Peter Rowley.
A young woman searching for her original; a journey that takes place in an alternative present day with encounters reflecting common experiences of a lost sense of belonging in modern life. Christine Rogers’ micro-budget sci-fi film I AM EVANGELINE is riddled with existential ideas – yet it is up to the public to bring this tale to the silver screen.
A sci-fi drama with a romantic undertow, I AM EVANGELINE centres around a desperate woman who takes on the hostile city as she searches for the cure to make her finally human. In doing so, she is forced to confront issues of identity and kin.
Having been conceived in October 2010, the film was both New Zealander Christine Rogers and Jonathan Roper’s idea to commit to a genre project rich in story, character and achievable on a tight budget. Rogers, who previously created the award-winning short Violent Hands (“Best Film” – Canterbury Short Film Festival, 1992), explains that “by writing the film in the genre of science-fiction I could talk more truthfully about what it means to belong, and in a way that includes others in our community who might feel that they don’t belong, like immigrants, and disabled people.”
Rogers isn’t the only New Zealand connection to the film either; beloved New Zealand actor Peter Rowley has been cast into the critical support role as “The Weeping Man”, a sociopath who runs a bookshop on the side.
Rowley joins a cast and crew of upcoming talent from across Australasia, as filming begins June 2013 with a tentative release date planned for early 2014 in Australia and New Zealand.
With the film being made on an incredibly small budget, the creative team behind I AM EVANGELINE have taken to a crowd-funding platform - offering gifts to those generous enough to donate ranging from a download of the finished film through to becoming an executive producer for the film.
