McCahon House Artist’s Residency – Call for Applications

The McCahon House Trust is calling for applications from professional visual artists for the
McCahon House Artist Residency Programme.

Three residencies, each of three months duration, are available between June 2014 and June 2015. The deadline for applications is Monday 19 August 2013.

Artist’s receiving the residency live and work in the purpose built house and studio located in French Bay, Titirangi, Auckland.

A selector panel including Sue Gardiner, John Daly-Peoples, Erika Congreve, Jeff Thomson and Cynthia Smith, (as trustee representative) take up the challenge to select three outstanding emergent or mid career professional artists. Criteria and application guidelines are available on the website or by contacting the manager.

The McCahon House Artists’ Residency, is amongst the most prestigious artists’ residencies in New Zealand. Inaugural artist Judy Millar said of the residency "My time in Titirangi ... forced me to confront my practice as a whole in a completely new way and to set my aspirations for what my work might achieve on a completely different level … McCahon’s presence at the house is … palpable and a constant reminder of the courage he had as a painter in a pioneer society.”  Judy Millar, Sept 2008. Since then 19 artists have successfully completed the programme, most recently with Ruth Buchanan who benefited returning from Berlin to reconnect; 'The residency offers a remarkable context in which to enter, both in terms of history but also as an entrance to Auckland's professional art community. During my residency I was able to develop both new and existing contacts in the scene, and for me this time was invaluable as a moment to reconnect with Auckland.' Our next Artist in Residency is Fiona Pardington.

Next to the house and studio is the restored house where Colin McCahon and his family lived in the 1950s. The house is open to the public on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3pm and for group and educational bookings on request.

The McCahon House Museum and Residency project is the initiative of the McCahon House Trust. The Trust has received significant support from the former Waitakere City Council, who gifted the McCahon cottage to the Trust, Sky City Community Trust, ASB Community Trust and Portage Licensing Trust and receives ongoing support from Auckland Council and Creative New Zealand. 

Successful artists will be notified 30 October 2014.
