Seventies music rated NZ’s favourite decade of song

Kiwis have chosen the era that gave us disco, heavy metal, funk and punk and as their favourite decade of song in the recent Share a COKE® and a Song survey for COCA-COLA.
Since March this year, New Zealanders have been able to stream and share popular songs from the last 50 years of music through the Share a COKE® and a Song campaign. The additional survey of more than 1,200 people aged 18+ has helped identify the decades of song Kiwis love most.
The 1970s came in first place with nearly one-third (28%) of all respondents choosing it as the decade of music they’d want to listen to above all others. The popping 80s and the swinging 60s followed closely in second (23%) and third place (20%). Music from the ‘noughties’ was the least favoured (14%).
The survey also found a surprisingly high proportion of Gen Y respondents preferred music from the decades before they were born. Nearly 40% those aged 18-30 selected the 60s, 70s or 80s rather than the 90s and 2000s.
“It’s great to see younger Kiwis’ appreciation reaching beyond their own generation, with so many still sharing some love for the 60s, 70s and 80s,” says music commentator and DJ Dean Campbell, who reviewed the results for COCA-COLA.
“Regardless of age, these prolific decades of music have held their meaning and relevance in our lives. These are the songs Kiwis have lived to, whether they were top of the pops in your high school years or favourites passed down from Mum or Dad.”
Dean says: “Today’s music isn’t just ‘our’ music – many of the songs topping the charts now pull from the timeless artists and styles that made the 60s, 70s and 80s so popular. Share a COKE® and a Song gives you that special chance to grab a bottle and rediscover some of the songs that have made their mark in music and on your life.”

findings from the survey
·
One-in-three Kiwis (33%) listen to four or more hours of
music each day.
· If forced to choose,
many of us would be prepared to give-up social media (73%),
television (41%) and even our mobile phone (34%) to keep
music in our lives.
· Gen Y Kiwis have a
greater passion for music than older generations, with 76%
rating is as ‘important’ or ‘very important’ versus
just 61% of those aged 30+.
· Friends
are the biggest influence on our musical taste (26%).
Other common influences are spouse/partners (15%), Dads
(14%), Mums (12%) and siblings (9%).
·
Kiwis ranked Rock as the #1 genre overall – nearly
one-third (31%) ranked it as their #1 favourite and
two-thirds (64%) ranked it in their top three. Pop came in
second place (19% ranked it their favourite), and
easy-listening came in third.
· We
favour particular decades of music depending on the moment.
For such musical moments, most people would put on seventies
music during a road-trip or a holiday (27% of vote),
eighties music to fill the wedding dance floor (37%), or
play songs from the 2000s to get fit (39%).
