Brown and Dickey Take Race Win and Series Too

MAY 27, 2013: It was a super result from the dynamic duo of Sam Brown and Jason Dickey when they stunned the field at the third and final round of the popular Honda Two-man Cross-country Series near Huntly on Saturday.

The pair, sharing the riding duties, finished nearly eight minutes clear of second-placed Auckland pairing Sam Greenslade and Craig Brown, with Hamilton’s Andrew Charleston riding solo on a Honda CRF250 to finish a remarkable third overall on the Maramarua Forest course.

This was enough for Hamilton’s Brown and Raglan’s Dickey to wrap up the DRD magazine-sponsored series overall after they had finished runners-up at the previous event, also in the Maramarua Forest.

They did not race the series opener but, with only two of the three rounds to be counted, it didn’t matter in the overall scheme of things.

Brown started for the Brown/Dickey team, taking his Honda Hamilton CRF450 into the lead from the start and he looked comfortable out front, although Greenslade was not far behind and, when Brown “had a moment” and fell from his bike on one of the steep downhills, Greenslade pounced to take the lead.

Brown slowly clawed back and soon the Brown/Dickey combo was back in front.

“Then we put our heads down and just took off, opening up a good lead” said the 22-year-old Brown, a salesman at Honda Hamilton.

“Jason (Dickey) then threw in a stunning lap. He’s really riding well at the moment and it showed. In the end it was a comfortable win for us.”

It was celebration time for Charleston too, as he took the ironman glory, finishing the series with a 1-2-1 score-line – and discarding his worst result, the runner-up finish at round two – to give himself the perfect score.

“Andrew (Charleston) has really come a long way in a short time with his riding too,” said Brown. “He has really stepped up the pace since becoming a senior.”
