Third Brisbane Feature for Quintessential (NZ)

Kiwi mare Quintessential (NZ) continued her love affair with Queensland’s Winter Racing Carnival with a tough win over Manighar in Saturday’s A$250,000 Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m).

Quintessential (Fast ‘N’ Famous x Florette) has won all of her Australian races at Eagle Farm having won the Group 3 Chairman’s Trophy at her last start and the Queensland Oaks last season.

Saturday’s race saw her put in a determined performance as she raced on the pace before hitting the lead and holding off the triple Group 1 winner Manighar for a short head win, her first at weight-for-age level.

“She loves Eagle Farm and we are going to take her to the Group 2 Brisbane Cup this weekend,” said her trainer John Sargent.

The win completed a great day in Australia for New Zealand bred horses who formed the Group 1 trifecta in the Queensland Oaks with Gondokoro (NZ) (Zabeel), Miss Zenella (NZ) (Zabeel) and Vaquera (NZ) (High Chaparral), with the super-sire Zabeel siring the race quinella.

Stakes Double for Sargent

Darci Brahma two-year-old Dugan (NZ) (Darci Brahma x Snipza Gold) captured his first stakes success at Wanganui on Saturday in the $50,000 Listed John Turkington Forestry Castletown Stakes (1200m) to provide the first leg of a trans-Tasman stakes double for his trainer John Sargent.

Sargent also trains Quintessential who was successful in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup in Queensland.

Winning his last start at Awapuni, Dugan put in a good performance on Saturday, racing just off the pace before challenging race leader Aaja Nachle in the straight and wearing her down to win by a head at the post.

“It was a good win from Dugan and great to get a stakes double,” said Sargent. “We will have a chat to his owners this week and see whether to press on to the Listed Ryder Stakes or send him for a spell.
