Green Frame Exhibition Opens to Public At Wigram
Christchurch people will gain a clear perception of the CBD’s Green Frame and Avon Precinct from an exhibition next week of a large polystyrene model at the Air Force Museum at Wigram.
From June 10-16, there will be free entry to the Green Frame Exhibition, which is being sponsored by engineering, management and specialist technical services company, Aurecon and Warren and Mahoney Architects.
The 15 metres by 12 metres 1:100 scale model follows the guidelines as outlined in the Christchurch Central Development Unit’s blueprint for the future development of the city. It was created by students from New Zealand’s four architectural schools - the School of Architectural Studies at CPIT, the School of architecture at Victoria University Wellington, the Architecture Department at Unitec and the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Auckland.
Aurecon’s Shaun Hardcastle said the model was constructed on the back of a four-week workshop and a month of designing as part of The Studio Christchurch Summer School.
“There were 55 students involved in five design studios covering a broad range of approaches for the Green Frame. These ideas were then tested through a series of design proposals. It really was an impressive result,” he said.
“The aim of the model is to stimulate discussion about the future of Christchurch and particularly the Green Frame. We used a wasabi green for the model as being indicative of the way that wasabi stimulates and invigorates the senses. This is what we want to see happening to people’s thinking.”
Daryl
Maguire, principal with Warren and Mahoney Architects called
the Green Frame exhibition “hugely
exciting.”
“When I first saw the model I was truly
excited about the positive feeling it invokes and the impact
that the frame will have on the new Christchurch. The
model has a beguiling scale – it is huge.”
Studio Christchurch will assemble the model, which is transported in nine large boxes, and will prepare an interpretation board and catalogue to explain the design concepts.
The exhibition will be open from 10am-5pm from June 10-16 in the Aircraft Hall at the Air Force Museum.
