Randa: Vice Via Noisey.com Premieres New Frankenstein Video
RANDA
Check out Randa’s new video for ‘Frankenstein’ tonight on VICE via NOISEY.COM
Directed by Thunderlips and produced by Alix Whittaker and Anna Duckworth at Candlelit Pictures - they present the music video as sitcom ‘TOTALLY RANDA’.
Anna explains, "The Frankenstein video is a love-note to 90s sitcoms. We wanted to put Randa in a space that really amplified her style, but was also visually striking - so we found ourselves in deep, trying to build a great set and shoot on 35mm film. Everything came together the moment Randa and Totems (who produced the track) walked on, lighting the whole place up with their energy."
Randa wrote the hook, ‘I’m a loser, I’m a freak, call me Frankenstein’ and believes that although it’s self-depreciating, it’s also empowering - expressing how she feels as an individual. She goes on to say, ‘there’s something about owning who you are and all your differences that’s quite liberating’.

Mainard Larkin (artist name Randa) has always been intrigued and consumed by popular culture, escaping into and referencing a colourful world of real and imagined clashes of popcult iconography. She was drawn into rap and spied alternative artists and producers whose sounds and wordplay veered to the unusual and irreverant. ”I realised what I wanted to express didn't have to sound a certain way - there were no limitations. The freedom to speak about anything in any context was really attractive”.
Randa is awkward but fresh, smooth but somewhat disjointed. And it seems to work. Supporting Grimes and Crystal Castles within her first year of performing live, her style stands out and her live show comes on with clarity and vivid energy.
