The Brave: The Defining Brave Tour 2013
Massive Company presents
The Brave: The
Defining Brave Tour 2013
Devised by the
Company
Directed by Sam Scott and Carla Martell
“What does it mean to be brave in New Zealand today?” That was the question Massive Company posed in 2012 with their smash hit The Brave. Though their stories may have changed, the ensemble’s question still remains and is asked throughout the North Island from August 7th.
“This is theatre stripped to its bare essentials so the human stories on stage are brought to the fore simply and effectively by those who have lived and are now telling the stories” – Theatreview
The Brave gives voice to a new generation of men finding strength through family, love, loss, fear, hope, belonging and brotherhood. The Brave lays it all on the line, as a starting point to engage young men to speak up and to boldly proclaim “this is me. I am. We are the Brave”.
“Knocked out by The Brave last night. Powerful, beautifully acted & directed. Had tears many times -will man up now! Great.” – Sam Neil (via Twitter)
Having generated an incredible amount of plaudits and interest upon its debut in Auckland last year, Massive Company is excited to launch The Brave Tour at Mangere Arts Centre before playing at Massey University-Albany, the Taranaki Arts Festival, the Tauranga Arts Festival and is being presented by the Central North Island Arts Consortium, a collective including the TSB Showplace in New Plymouth, Clarence St. Theatre in Hamilton and the Hawke’s Bay Opera House in Hastings.
The eight men were asked to write letters to important people, who still are, once were or never were in their lives. Jonny, Todd, Scott, Dominic, Beulah, Andy, Leki and Neil return to rework The Brave, each one discussing what is relevant to them 12 months on, as their lives change, bringing a different flavour and a re-defining of The Brave now in 2013.
The Brave was originally devised with Carla Martel and Artistic Director Sam Scott, who this past Queen Birthday received a MNZM for her services to theatre. Massive Company’s work will “enrich, enliven and entertain” using stories combined with “raw visceral movement and deep powerful articulation of the personal to explore universals” (New Zealand Listener).
Featuring: Jonny Moffat, Todd Emerson, Beulah Koale, Scott Cotter, Dominic Ona-Ariki, Andy Sani, Leki Jackson Bourke, and Neil Amituanai.
“The show was an inspiration of the human spirit, for myself personally I have struggled with it in recent time, so will use it as a guiding light” – Anonymous Audience Member, Q 2012
