Atamira Dance Company tours Central North Island – KAHA 2013
KAHA 2013 tours through the central North Island in June in association with the Central North Island Arts Consortium, a collective of theatres from Hamilton, New Plymouth and Hastings. The consortium aims to expand regional touring of high-quality New Zealand art work which would not ordinarily be available to local audiences. In 2012 the KAHA production attracted close to 70% new audience, and has proven to be an ideal platform for audiences to experience what Atamira has to offer.
'FROM HAKA to BREAKIN’ FROM THE 1980S', KAHA is a collection of seven short works that showcase the strength and diversity of both contemporary dance and of Atamira Dance Company; the overall programme speaks to a wide audience of dance lovers, families and those that want to experience a high quality live performance filled with beauty, mana and power!KAHA 2013 features a NEW line up of short works.
Building on the success of the 2012 tour, KAHA 2013 features an updated programme; Artistic director Moss Patterson presents three pieces MOKO, due for its full length debut in 2014, and two shorter works, HAKA, commanding audiences as the powerful opener and TE PAKI a trio exploring the rhythm of the sea. NEW work PAARUA (‘Double Contact’) is an adrenalin-saturated and humorous dance choreographed by Nancy Wijohn that explores competitive strategies and sporting tactics. Kelly Nash’s quirky and incisive new work INDIGENARCHY and RAKAU, choreographed by Gaby Thomas fuses contemporary dance with traditional Maori song and stick game.Completing the programme is the very popular Atamira take on “Poi E Thriller”; as made famous by the Taika Waititi hit Boy – choreographed by long-standing Atamira member Dolina Wehipeihana this mash-up of kapa haka and Michael Jackson moves is a catchy toe-tapper! POI E!
