Haier Pulse Captain - Wgtn Sports Personality of the Year

14 June 2013

Haier Pulse Captain Voted Wellington Sports Personality of the Year

Haier Pulse Head Coach Robyn Broughton and CEO Chris Hooper have paid tribute to captain Katrina Grant, who was named Sports Personality of the Year at last night’s Dominion Post Wellington Sports Awards.

Grant, who has been in exceptional form for her team during the 2013 ANZ Championship, beat off tough competition from Olympic silver medalist athlete Nick Willis, Olympic bronze medalist rower Peter Taylor and Paralympic gold medalist swimmer Mary Fisher.

The winner was chosen through a public vote, which attracted over 3,000 entries. It was a highly-deserved award for Grant, who was also a finalist in 2012, just missing out to All Black Cory Jane.

“Katrina thoroughly deserves the award; as captain of the Haier Pulse she is a great role model for both her team and the community,” acknowledged Broughton. “She enjoys meeting people and is prepared to put in the hard work promoting both the team and the sport of netball.”

CEO Hooper, who was one of the 500 members of the Wellington sporting community in attendance at the glittering ceremony, was delighted to witness such a popular figure being recognised. “It was awesome to see Katrina win the title of Sports Personality of the Year at the 2013 Dominion Post Wellington Sports Awards.

“The sporting celebrities and guests, including legendary NZ cricketer Bob Blair, applauded as Katrina took the stage to collect her well-deserved trophy and listen to her story. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful personality leading the Haier Pulse and doing such great work for charity.

“Also recognised as Wellington Coach of the Year was Silver Ferns Head Coach Waimarama Taumaunu, so it was a fantastic night for netball in Wellington!”
