David vs Goliath Battle at Claudelands Arena

David vs Goliath Battle at Claudelands Arena

24 JUNE 2013

For Immediate Release

Heavyweight boxer David Tua’s comeback fight has been announced and it is taking place right here in Hamilton.

Tua will take on Goliath sized Russian boxer Alexander Ustinov at Claudelands Arena on Saturday 31 August.

The giant 36 year old Russian, who stands at a towering 6 feet 8 inches (203cm), has won 28 of his 29 professional boxing bouts earning him a top 10 ranking in both the WBA and IBF heavyweight divisions.

The last time Tua fought in Hamilton was in ‘the fight of the century’ where he knocked out Kiwi rival Shane Cameron in the second round. The match attracted 1.8 million viewers across all television channels and 80,000 pay-per-views on the Sky network.

Event organisers, Duco Promotions Ltd are expecting the interest in the August fight to match anything that has ever been done in New Zealand. The fight, and the city, will be broadcast nationally as well as in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Germany, United States and Australia. It is expected that up to 200 million will tune in.

Hosting an event of this calibre, with this international audience, is fantastic for the city says Hamilton Mayor, Julie Hardaker.

“The event will no doubt see huge numbers of spectators visiting Hamilton from out of town and the widespread international and national media coverage will focus the spotlight on Hamilton and what we have to offer.”

“It is going to be a huge weekend for our accommodation, retail and hospitality sectors and for the city as a whole.”

For Event Facilities Business Development and Marketing Director Murray Jeffrey, Claudelands Arena is the perfect space for the upcoming boxing match.

“Claudelands Arena is one of the best fight venues in the country. The arena’s unique design brings the audience close to the action and every seat is a good one. This fight will be one to remember and we are looking forward to hosting it at Claudelands.”

Claudelands will be offering a mixture of general admission seating and corporate tables for the event.
