Prizes up for grabs in alcohol safety video competition for youth
Over $1,000 in prizes is up for grabs for Rotorua youth in a video competition aimed at getting young people to think about safety around alcohol.
Rotorua District Council (RDC), the Youth Council, and Ira Matatau Active Citizenship programme are coordinating the Keen To Get On It? video competition for 13 to 18 year olds.
The first prize package is worth over $1,000; second place valued at $600; third place valued at $300; and there are also a number of spot prizes.
RDC Regulatory Services manager, Neven Hill, said the 90-second videos should express young people's thoughts on alcohol and safety.
He said videos need to cover at least one of the
following topics:
• What you look like
drunk/wasted
• What to do when you see a mate
drunk?
• The propaganda of alcohol
marketing.
• Real life stories
• Think Safe/Drink
Safe
• The effects of alcohol.
“This is an Alcohol Harm Reduction strategy that gives young people the opportunity to ‘think before they drink’ and to promote sensible activities,” said Mr Hill.
“It’s a new initiative to engage with youth, from a youth prospective, as it’s important we get this message across in a language they understand.”
A special screening night will be held for entrants and their families and friends, where winners will also be announced. Winning videos will be uploaded on Facebook.

All entries must be received by 5pm on 7 August, with award winners announced on 20 August.
