Atamira dancer wins Eileen May Norris Dance
Scholarship
Atamira Dance Company is proud to announce that one of their principal female dancers, Bianca Hyslop, is the 2013 recipient of the esteemed Eileen May Norris Dance Scholarship.
The scholarships are awarded to individuals aged between 18 and 25 who have demonstrated outstanding dance talent in New Zealand. The scholarship is open to individual dancers of any genre undertaking a specific dance project with an appropriate university, polytechnic, dance school or academy, or for those dancing with a professional body or company.
24 year old Hyslop has been with Atamira Dance
Company since 2009, when she undertook an internship in her
third year at UNITEC. Since graduating, Hyslop has travelled
to the Festival of Pacific Arts in the Solomon Islands in
2012 and is about to go on tour in the United States with
Atamira’s highly anticipated tour of the KAHA
show to Hawaii, San Francisco and Jacob’s Pillow
Dance Festival in Massachusetts.
Hyslop has already made
her mark in the field of Maori Contemporary Dance, gracing
the national stage with the likes of Okareka Dance Company,
the World of Wearable Arts and Atamira Dance
Company.
“My highlights have been being with the people in the company [Atamira], the sense of cultural empowerment and the kids we get to perform to and inspire” Hyslop has commented. “This scholarship is exciting. I already feel like I have everything I desire so I’m going to try and give back everything I get out of it.”
Atamira Dance Company’s tour of the United States takes place from July 18th and has already expanded on their initial performance dates in San Francisco, with supplementary performances taking place around the Cup Village as part of the 2013 America’s Cup events.
