Fashion collections on top form

In the brand-driven world of fashion, strong imagery is a key to success so CPIT third year fashion design and technology students were delighted to work with one of Christchurch’s best fashion photographers Dave Richards recently. Richards shot their collections for FORM, this Friday at 5.30pm at CPIT.

FORM will showcase 11 student collections through photos, “lookbooks” and racks of garments – some of which will be for sale on the night.

“From my perspective FORM is a great opportunity for industry, family, friends and potential customers to see the garments up close. A lot of hard work has gone into design, patternmaking and construction to finish these collections within the short space of time allocated,” CPIT fashion tutor Holly Liberona says. 

CPIT’s fashion programmes are technically challenging and designed to produce versatile graduates who are prepared for this fast-paced and demanding industry. Working with Richards, whose customers include World and Ballantynes is another way for students to gain first-hand experience of the industry.

The FORM collections were directed by the industry partners the students’ completed their work experience with. Alice Sutherland worked with CPIT graduate and Westpac Young Designer 2011 Georgia Currie, who established the Georgia Alice label and has been overseeing photo shoots of her own.

Sutherland’s White Noise collection is a striking palette of black and white with lilac highlights. Working with a well-known photographer was a highlight, she said. “Dave has done amazing work with New Zealand designers. Everyone was on a high after the shoot. The process was so professional and I felt very well prepared going into the shoot. With Dave being so fast we were able to mix and match outfits so I ended up with 15 ‘looks’ instead of six. I just thought the whole experience was pretty relelvent to the real world of fashion.”

Every fashion brand has to go through this process for each collection they produce, Liberona says. “So this gave the students the opportunity to experience first-hand what it is like for industry to have to orchestrate these shoots, including selection of models from Portfolio and then styling the models working with Kristen Stewart School of Make-up and True Grit Hair Spa.

“By adding in this new opportunity for our students I feel their learning is now a holistic journey as the next collection they produce will be showcased on the catwalk at CPIT’s PITCH fashion show later in the year.”
