Body Art under the Big Top! Body Art Showcase – "The Circus"

Body Art under the Big Top! NZ Body Art Showcase 2013 – “The Circus”

The New Zealand Body Art Trust revealed at Sunday’s NZ Beauty Expo the concept for the 2013 installment of their ever-popular and ever-growing NZ Body Art Showcase, taking place this year on Saturday September 21st.

Taking to the main stage, “The Lost Circus” saw 9 performers and 10 body artists, thrilling audiences with clowns, lion tamers, acrobats and tight-rope walkers. The 30 minute exhibition served as a prelude to the theme of the 2013 awards – The Circus.

The 30 minute exhibition was also, on a sad note, a tribute to performer Sara Guillot-Guyard, a performer from Cirque du Soleil’s show “KA” who died during a performance in Las Vegas last week. The piece of music used during the exhibition performance was used during “KA”– little consolation however to the incredible talent that has been lost.

With a fresh concept for their annual showcase each year, “The Circus” is perhaps the broadest theme the NZBAA have devised. “It can be interpreted in so many ways” Mem Bourke, creator of the New Zealand Body Art Awards, reveals. “I want to provoke the thought of unseen lives and hidden ramifications of the circus performer – both human and animal. It’s an area generally unquestioned between the live performances of circus.”

“This theme is to stimulate thinking outside the box” says Jonathan Smith, Executive Producer. “It will allow the artist to think about the bold and bright design concepts and hopefully encourage the use of prosthetics.”

Over 48 performers and 90 artists with their assistants were involved in the 2012 event, which returned to the Bruce Mason Centre on the North Shore to a house near capacity and feverous for body art. With registrations now open to participate in the 2013 event, the NZ Body Art Trust is expecting higher entries than last year.
