A “Sorceress of percussion”

A “Sorceress of percussion”

STROMA presents a concert of scintillating percussion from Australia's leading percussion virtuoso.

7:30pm, 1 August 2013
Ilott Theatre, Wellington Town Hall

Coined the “sorceress of percussion” by the Canberra Times, CLAIRE EDWARDES joins Stroma, conducted by HAMISH McKEICH, in a concert of contrasting styles.

Specializing in the marimba, Claire regularly performs concertos, chamber and solo recitals on the full gamut of percussion instruments, playing some of the most innovative and cutting-edge music in the world today.

In 1999, she won the coveted ABC Young Performers Award. She now teaches at the Sydney Conservatorium and is co-artistic director of Sydney-based Ensemble Offspring.

Event Horizon will feature a “micro-concerto” by American post-minimalist Steven Mackey. Clearly influenced by jazz sonorities and with reminiscences of favourite works by John Adams (that have appeared in previous Stroma concerts), the micro-concerto promises to be a beautiful showcase of Claire’s talents

Also on the programme are three works by New Zealand expatriates ALISON ISODORA, DOROTHY KER and JEROEN SPEAK. Dorothy and Jeroen will be moving from London to Wellington in mid-2013, where they will spend a year at the Lilburn Residence in Thorndon.

Rounding out the concert is an ear-shimmering version of LIGETI’s harpsichord classic Continuum, arranged for two marimbas.
