Two Kiwi Teams into World Cup Finals

PRESS RELEASE

Two Kiwi Teams into World Cup Finals

We’re getting to the sharp end of the Rugby League Festival of World Cups and two of the three Kiwi teams competing have made the finals, while the NZ Students play their semi-final on Saturday morning (NZ-time). Here’s an update on our crews, including a special result this morning from the NZ Armed Forces team.

Kiwi Ferns (NZ women)
The Kiwi Ferns beat England 34-16 yesterday morning. By all reports that was a real tough match. The win puts the Kiwi Ferns into their fourth successive World Cup final at 12.45am Monday (NZ-time). They’ll meet the Australian Jillaroos there.

But first, to complete pool play, the Kiwi girls have to play Australia on Friday morning (NZ-time). So it’ll be interesting to see how both teams approach that game, knowing that they’ll be meeting again for keeps less than 72 hours later.

The Kiwi Ferns team to play Australia (on Friday) is: 1. Tasha Tapu, 2. Geneva Webber, 3. Honey Hireme (Captain), 4. Sarina Fiso (Vice-captain), 5. Chanelle Wright, 6. Nora Maaka, 7. Rona Peters, 8. Annabelle Hohepa, 9. Lisa Campbell, 10. Maryanne Hemara, 11. Kathleen Keremete, 12. Charlotte Scanlon, 13. Kahurangi Peters, 14. Simone Panapa, 15. Amber Hall, 16. Aimee Gilbert, 17. Kelly Maipi, 18. Akenese Pereira

NZ Students
The NZ Students beat Scotland 58-22 early this morning. That puts them into the semi-finals of their 8-team competition, where they’ll meet England (7am Saturday, NZ-time). The English are the top qualifiers from their side of the draw, while the Kiwis finished second following a loss to Australia.

Here’s a report on the Scotland game which the NZ team has sent through: New Zealand Students beat Scotland

The final of the Students’ World Cup is 3am Monday (NZ-time). So straight after the Kiwi Ferns’ match.

NZ Armed Forces
The NZ Armed Forces team played their semi-final against England this morning (NZ-time).

England was a firm favourite for that one, having beaten the Kiwis 32-8 in pool play. But our boys have really made the last week count and delivered a 20-16 win to go into the final against Australia.

In pool play the Kiwis went down 22-32 to the Australians. So, with the improvement the Kiwis have shown, this should be one interesting match.

The final of the Armed Forces World Cup is 1am Sunday (NZ-time).
