TESTIMONIALS:
“…a real bonus for our local music community” – Murray Cammick, Rip It Up (NZ)

“Going Global was a top-notch experience, from both a professional and personal standpoint. The other delegates were absolutely spectacular, offering not just a substantive look into various facets of the industry, but also the opportunity to forge business relationships and friendships I'll carry throughout the rest of my life. The conference was extremely well-organized, right down to the evening showcases, which were a perfect representation of the wide range of exceptional talent coming out of this beautiful, energetic, and creative country. In fact, I'm now working with two artists who performed during last year's showcases - Mel Parsons and Tom Lark!” – Shawnté Salabert, VP Creative – Sugaroo! And October just got better - not only will it see us revelling in that special new light of Daylight Savings, but we also have the APRA Silver Scroll Awards to look forward to. The 2013 APRA Silver Scroll Awards will take place on Tuesday 15th October at Vector Arena. The show will consist of all the usual elements now synonymous with the special night – the re-imagining of finalists’ songs, the awarding of the APRA Maioha, SOUNZ Contemporary and Most Played Work awards, an induction into the NZ Music Hall of Fame and of course, New Zealand’s most coveted music award, the APRA Silver Scroll. For those who can’t be there, the evening will be streamed live online via www.nzherald.co.nz. Entries for the awards closed mid June and are currently being pored over by a panel of judges. The judges will select the top 20 contenders for the APRA Silver Scroll, which are then voted on by APRA members to decide the winner. The top 20 will be announced and member voting opens on Thursday 25th July. http://www.apra.co.nz/

A week today, The Black Seeds roll into town for their only London show this year. They arrive fresh from rocking one of the biggest reggae festivals in Europe, Summerjam in Germany, and head off almost immediately to support Chase & Status and Skunk Anansie at the Serengetti Festival. Support on the night comes from the amazing Samoan soulstress Iva Lamkum, whose rich syrupy voice has had MTV compare her to Amy Winehouse, and who you may know from the vocals she provided for the Sola Rosa hit ‘Turn Around’. Around the World
Mid-year SoundScan report: Indie labels sold more than any one major label (in the USA)
16 July 2013
by Nathan Jolly from The Music Network

Due to the sales might of Mumford and Sons, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, The Lumineers and Taylor Swift, independent labels have claimed 33.4% of American music sales this year, a larger market share than any of the three majors.

These results were revealed in Billboard's mid-year SoundScan report, with indie label sales up from last year's 32.9%. While this is a clear sign of the shifting business models in place, don't go declaring the death of the majors any time soon; many of these labels still use major labels for their distribution. Still, it's certainly a sign of the times, with many major sellers doing so through independent labels.

Mumford & Sons have sold 1.1 million albums this year, with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis selling 670,000 album, plus many millions of singles. The Lumineers sold 660,000 copies of their debut album, while Taylor Swift moved 635,000 copies of last year's Red. Elsewhere, the likes of Vampire Weekend, Queens of the Stone Age and Alabama Shakes enjoyed impressive sales.

New release fanfare
Kingston. You might not have heard the name, but you’ve most definitely heard their music. From the energetic, upbeat theme of KFC’s current media campaign ‘Good Feeling’ to the equally dynamic track ‘You Want It’ that graces the Ford Kuga commercials of late, Kingston know how to write catchy power-pop anthems. Their long awaited debut album, ‘Black and Bloom’ is due for release this July, filled with electric, guitar driven pop that really gets in. Kingston’s latest single ‘Miss You’ packs a lot of punch with its pounding electric guitar, rolling drums and very catchy melody. Gibson’s voice is engaging as he delivers pining lyrics of lost love. This track is a tad melancholy, but heavy-heartedness never overrides the exhilaration of a Kingston song. ‘Black & Bloom’ was recorded and mixed with US Producer Brandon Friesen across multiple studios in multiple countries, including Toronto, LA, Auckland and even a makeshift batch in Piha. The album was mastered in LA by Tom Baker at Precision Mastering (Beastie Boys, 30 Seconds To Mars). Kingston is released by Aeroplane and distributed via DRMNZ and Rhythmethod.

Flying Out have compiled an eight track sampler of forthcoming releases/reissues from artists on Flying Nun & Arch Hill. Sandwiched between The Clean's 'Some One' and Street Chant's cover of 'There Is No Depression in New Zealand' are some sweet tunes by Bird Nest Roys, Sharpie Crows, Skeptics, Surf City, Ghost Wave and Transistors...Set up account for a FREE download here...

Following on from his first single ‘Medicine Man’ Tama Waipara releases ‘The Hunter’ – the second single and from his forthcoming album Fill Up The Silence. Written by Tama Waipara and producer Aaron Nevezie ‘The Hunter’ is the second single from his second album due for release September. Says Tama of the song “The song is about the hunt in all its many forms. Layered with primal rhythmic patterns (including poi) the bounce between frantic drive and flippant whimsy underpins the relentless and universal quest for love”. With the grunt of an urban grind and the unbridled power of an open wilderness The Hunter is available on iTunes from today 19th July. https://itunes.apple.com/nz/album/the-hunter-single/id675500961

On the live front
The Shot Band is teaming up with acclaimed New Zealand singer/songwriter Katie Thompson to embark on a dual-headline tour throughout the country this July. Wellington-based The Shot Band was formed from a cheeky onstage rehearsal nearly a decade ago and now forms a lean, stand-up and acoustic band, featuring Rob Joass, Hamish Graham and Bill Hickman. Three singers, three front men and three songwriters - equally at home in a big festival audience or unplugged at a folk club. "Where the spirit of Johnny Cash meets the swagger of Keith Richards," described Nick Bollinger. “Excellent,” says Michael Flynn, NZ Musician. Rob Joass was also a finalist for Best Country song with Baggage from the last 'Hobnail' album at this year’s NZ Country Music Awards. Christchurch-based Katie Thompson, who opened for Elton John at his only New Zealand concert in 2011, was a nominee for Female Artist of the Year at the NZ Country Music Awards last year. She has just released her live EP ‘Moving On’ – featuring her version of The Shot Band’s ‘Dead in the Water’. Katie has a hugely emotive voice and an ability to capture a slice of everyday life in her music. Katie’s second album ‘Impossible’ gained nationwide exposure with two singles ‘Good As Gold’ and ‘Cruel to be Kind’ receiving nationwide airplay.

Parachute Music is pleased to be bringing Steve Apirana and Paul Colman to a town near you. The trans-Tasman duo will play 10 North Island dates this August, weaving their songs from Whangarei to Wellington. Steve Apirana’s pedigree reaches back into the seventies, having played support for such luminaries as Black Sabbath, Split Ends, Dragon and Butler and The Velvettes. A Grammy nominated singer/songwriter and a world-class entertainer, Paul Colman has played many roles in his musical life. As founder of the Paul Colman Trio, Colman won worldwide fans with his penchant for catchy Christian pop. In 2005, Colman answered the call of his fellow countrymen the Newsboys, stepping in to fulfill guitar duties for the Grammy Award-winning outfit. Leaving the band in 2009, Colman reunited briefly with the Paul Colman Trio and continues to perform solo across the globe. Joining Steve and Paul on tour is Talia Caradus, a member of Parachute Music’s inaugural artist development programme. Each night will also feature a brief update on all things Parachute Music.
