Artweek Auckland - 11th - 20th October 2013
60 venues and galleries, 10 days and nights, 8 neighbourhoods and 100 events and exhibitions; this is ARTWEEK 2013 – taking over the city once more from October 11th.
Now in its fourth year, organizers can boast an unprecedented amount of participation this year as Artweek seeks not only to support Auckland artists and galleries emerging and established, but to make arts accessible for all – especially reaching new audiences.
With 8 neighbourhoods this year, including Auckland’s BIG Little City, Uptown, South Auckland, West Auckland and North Shore, the Karangahape Road , Ponsonby and Newtown precinct combined provide the most concentrated amount of galleries, events and exhibitions this year. K Road, for example, has seen an increase in the Look at K Road event – as 15 shop-front windows exhibit art from a wide range of artists; an increase from 2012’s event. K Road also presents a range of independent events offering unique art activations.
The 2013 programme welcomes the likes of Billy Apple ONZM, a tour visiting the sites of Billy’s artwork, culminating in an afternoon tea with a talk about the artist’s life and work at the Gala Café in Mt Eden. This is a great opportunity to learn more about one of our most famous New Zealand artists and his time studying in London and exhibiting in New York; including the 1964 exhibition “The American Supermarket” alongside pop culture icon Andy Warhol.
Chan Andreassand Gallery offers a series of workshops and events tailor-made for young Aucklanders to sample from art world. As part of The Arts Menagerie’s You and Me series, the arts initiative is passionate about collaborating to express creativity through an assortment of avenues. Be in shadow puppetry, film-making, sculpting, poetry or many more activities that fall under the “arts” banner, The Arts Menagerie have in store an exciting series of events for those young people.
Ponsonby Central, a vibrant hub of culture, houses everybody has a name –a community based project curated by Louise Afoa and Ophelia Mikkelson in collaboration with the Uptown Arts Trust. Inviting Auckland residents to send in their name, their favourite song and their favourite family recipe, all three come to life across seven days creating a truly interactive and, more importantly, communal event during Artweek.
Artweek isn’t all about the events happening “uptown”. Parnell, will house the original Indian, as ridden by Burt Munro, on display as part of the neighbourhoods walking tours. Fusion, at the Art Real Gallery, features a number of Asian Artists who are current living in New Zealand with their distinctive art-style as combining their original cultural roots with new life experiences and cultural impact from living in New Zealand. Parnell is already rich with artwork - its cathedras featuring stained-glass windows designed by Kiwi artists are the stuff many don’t realize exist.
2013 also brings back the ever popular walking tours and, for those who fancy roaming around on two wheels, the cycling tours across Auckland. The hallowed vaults of BNZ and PWC (to name a few) are opened once again for the public to explore the collections they house, while new events such as Documentary Edge screening a selection of documentaries regarding the art-scene come on board for the 2013 season.
Artweek 2013 provides Auckland with an ever-increasing amount of events and activities for many to discover, engage and indulge.
