Harcourts Henderson gives back to the Salvation Army

He’s now a top sales consultant for Harcourts Henderson, but when Sebastian Pinto first emigrated from India 11 years ago he had very little.

Sebastian and his wife modestly went about setting up a home for themselves and visited a Salvation Army store to buy furniture.

They were struck by the kindness of a volunteer who offered to deliver their purchases, including a cupboard, to their home. When the volunteer discovered Sebastian and his wife were expecting their first child, he also brought them toys for their baby.

“I have held this memory very close to my heart. After all these y
ears that cupboard still takes pride of place in my home,” Sebastian says.

Sebastian is one of many New Zealanders touched by the work of the Salvation Army, and it was with great pride Harcourts Henderson was able to present a cheque for $10,000 to the organisation on behalf of the Harcourts Foundation.
The $10,000 will go towards the purchase of a new truck needed to collect furniture and food to benefit people and families in need.

Waitakere Salvation Army pastor Stu Tong accepted the cheque on behalf of the organisation.

“This is the answer to a prayer for us. We do around 15 pick-ups of furniture and food four days a week and our old truck is about to give up on us. This will allow us to continue the work we are doing in the community.”

Harcourts CEO Hayden Duncan says the purpose of the Harcourts Foundation is to help communities at grassroots level, and he is well aware of the impact the Salvation Army has on many people in need.

“Sebastian is now a successful business man, but when he needed kindness and a helping hand the Salvation Army was there to give it to him. We are proud to be able to support their work.”

The Harcourts Foundation was established in 2008 to provide support that helps, grows and enriches local communities. To date over $2m has been allocated to charities.
