NZRL National Competition 2013 - September 9 Results
Auckland, NZ, September 9, 2013 – The first game of the evening was a try-fest with the Stingrays scoring ten to the Stallions four. The Stallions, who also featured last Monday Night in the televised game against the Orcas, lead at half time 16 - 12, but struggled in the second half against the well drilled Stingrays team which features a number of representative players including NZ Residents Tony Tuia and Roman Hifo.
In the night's second game the favourites the Akarana Falcons got out to a fast start, scoring two unconverted tries within minutes. However far from giving up and despite the growing penalty count against them, the Wellington Orcas slowly worked their way back into the game. The introduction of #16 Robbie McKenzie was a turning point for the Orcas, and following an injury break they forced a Falcons error close to their line and McKenzie barged over to score. He was in again not long afterwards and their third try came on the back of some committed on-line defence followed by an excellent 60m run down the sideline by Jay Lesoa. Leading 16 - 8 at half time the Orcas looked to be well in control.
Shortly after half time the momentum changed when Orcas #6 Denzil Hokianga was sinbinned for lifting his arm in a tackle and connecting with the throat of Falcons #14 Tevita Latu. Latu recovered and helped the Falcons score two tries and re-take the lead 22 - 16. From there it was an arm wrestle with the Falcons holding on despite losing so many players to injury they were without interchanges. A late 40/20 kick by Falcons #6 Trent Wallace saw them once again on the attack and a penalty took the score to 24-16 in the Falcons favour before a very late try in the corner to Orcas winger Paul Ulberg. The final score was 24 - 20 to the Falcons who now sit top of the Pirtek National Premiership table.
