Maori Music Expo & Te Koanga Maori Fashion Show
The 6th National Waiata Maori Music begins today with the Maori Music Expo and the Te Koanga Maori Fashion Show, at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House in Hastings.
The expo features the National Maori Hand Games, vocal and taonga puoro workshops as well as a panel discussion, a chance to quiz performers, songwriters and singers on what it takes to make it in the music industry.
Today, young Kaipara singer Majic Paora will perform, promoting her new album and there will be a chance to speak to her, as well as the Queen of Loops, Mihirangi Fleming, at expo. Mihirangi will also a finalist and a guest performer at the National Waiata Maori Music Awards ceremony tomorrow night.
There will also be a ukuele workshop and taonga puoro performance by teacher Jerome Kavanagh, who will also offer at putangitangi workshop later today.
Hamilton Duo, brother and sister combo, Kaleb and Eden Hapuku, will also be the recipient of the Emerging Artist Award, which will be presented this afternoon.
The National Maori Hand Games will also be held today for primary and intermediate sections, featuring Whakaropiropi Ai, Whai and Hei Tama Tu Tama. The games will be run again tomorrow for secondary and national sections.
Tomorrow at the expo, there will be performances by Hawke’s Bay secondary school kapa haka groups, a vocal workshop with Waiata Maori Music Awards ambassador Taisha Tari and a putangitangi workshop with Jerome Kavanagh.
There will also be performances by pop singer Seth Haapu and a chance to meet two guest performers, Maisey Rika and reggae leader Katchafire at the expo tomorrow.
The Te Koanga Maori Fashion Show will be held this evening, 7pm, featuring eight premier designers and 11 students from the EIT Hawke’s Bay Certificate in Fashion Apparel Year 2 course.
The show’s artist directors will be Duane & Tutevira Wichman of Auckland-based company, Oyster Entertainment, who return for the third year to work on the event.
The couple is known for work on Style Pacifika and as producers of the New Zealand NZ Bridal Fashion Week among others.
Miss Aotearoa pageant director Angela Cudd has been working to train the group of models for this year’s Te Koanga Fashion Show. The pageant was held in 2012 and will be held every two year’s, with the next in 2014.
