Opening celebrations for next spoke of scenic trail
Saturday 28 September marks a significant milestone for the Waikino and Waihi communities as the next scenic section of the Hauraki Rail Trail from Waikino to Waihi is officially opened to the public. Those keen to be amongst the first to experience this new ride can register at 10.30am, before the Trail is officially opened at 11.00am, and cyclists set off on the 11km ride along the spectacular tree lined riverside.
The grand opening starts at the Goldfields Railway station, Wrigley Street, Waihi with the crowds gathering to hear the official word on this new addition to the already well loved Hauraki Rail Trail from Mayor John Tregidga and politicians alike.
“It is very pleasing to see the completion of stage one of the Hauraki Rail Trail project with the opening of this new section”, stated the Mayor. “This final section enhances the Trail experience with its scenic and historic features”, he said.
At the conclusion of the opening ride to the historic Victoria Battery site in Waikino, an opening day gala is planned for visitors to experience local hospitality with food, local stalls and music to be enjoyed by all. Local businesses have kindly donated an array of spot prizes that are worth showing up for... including a mountain bike, and accommodation at the Manawa Ridge Luxury Lodge.
The Hauraki Rail Trail was announced by the Government as one of seven ‘Quick Starts’ in 2009 and was awarded $4m from the then Ministry of Economic Development towards the project. The joint project includes Hauraki, Thames-Coromandel and Mamamata Piako District Councils, of which have each contributed between $500,000 and $1.2m.
The Trail is conveniently located in close proximity to Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga, and is accessible from Thames, Paeroa, Te Aroha, Waihi and the Karangahake Gorge. The 77km Trail showcases some of the best scenery New Zealand has to offer, from the Pohutukawa trees on the Thames Coast, through lush green Waikato farm lands, to areas rich in pioneering history. A major highlight includes riding through the stunning Karangahake Gorge with the 1.1km tunnel.
Waihi Ward Chairman Sel Baker explains “the Paeroa to Waihi section is particularly impressive due to the Trail winding alongside the picturesque river, through well established trees, over numerous bridges, and passes the old Waikino mine workings which are interesting viewing for the rider or walker”.
The opening of the next section of Trail marks the beginning of the school holidays and the Waihi Goldfest so is the perfect opportunity to get the kids outdoors for some fresh air and wholesome fun.
The Hauraki Rail Trail is a grade one trail; an easy ride for all ages. The Waikino to Waihi section is 11km, Waikino to Paeroa is 13km, Paeroa to Thames is 32km, and Paeroa to Te Aroha is 21km. The Kaiaua to Kopu leg will be constructed in the future. There are many options for day rides or multi day rides.
