The Champions Challenge - Two Weeks to Go!

Press Release:  Monday 16 September 2013

The Champions Challenge - Two Weeks to Go!

NZ’s SKYCITY Breakers VS China’s Dongguan Leopards

There is only two weeks to go until the first ever professional basketball series between New Zealand and Chinese club teams is held at Claudelands Arena, Hamilton on Tuesday 1st October.

The Champions Challenge will see three time ANBL champions, NZ’s SKYCITY Breakers and China’s Dongguan Leopards clash in a game that promises to bring the best of international basketball to the heart of the Waikato.

The Dongguan Leopards are from the Southern Division of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).  Coached by Australia’s most successful coach in basketball history and with a career spanning over 20 years, Brian Goorjian previously coached the Sydney Kings - the only other team besides the Breakers to win three consecutive ANBL titles!

The Leopards roster features five players over 6 foot 10 (208.28 cm – compared to only one NZ player!) and several Chinese national team members plus two US import players including guard Bobby Brown, who has over 120 games in the NBA with clubs such as the Los Angeles Clippers and New Orleans Hornets.

Hamilton City's Event Facilities Director of Business Development and Marketing Murray Jeffrey said that Hamilton was excited to have the Breakers back for their third year in a row and, with teams of such a high international standard, the game would be nail biting unmissable experience for sports fans.
