New National record set ahead of Freediving World Champs

New Zealand freediver David Mullins has once again taken a national freediving record and is a major contender for a gold medal and world record at the Freediving individual world championships being held in Kalamata, Greece.

32 year old Mullins dove to 125m on a single breath of air and returned to the surface to claim the national record from William Trubridge. This constant weight dive required Mullins to dive with a monofin to a base plate sitting at 125m under the surface and return to the surface with a tag that had been attached to the plate and complete a surface protocol in front of official judges.

Mullins who currently holds the world record in “dynamic no-fins” freediving has the attention of his fellow freedivers at the world champs currently underway in Greece, as the one to watch for the gold medal and is one of only 4 divers in the competition that are capable of diving deeper than 120m. The current world record in Constant Weight freediving is currently 125m held by Russian Alexi Molchanov.

World records are not new to Mullins, who has held a total of six world records in freediving and has a spearfishing world record as well.

When asked about the 125m dive, Mullins said in jest, “that it was time for someone else besides William Trubridge to have a depth record”.

Trubridge, a fellow world record holding NZ freediver holds 2 current world records in ‘Free Immersion’ and ‘No Fins’ freediving and is also competing at the individual world champs, he too has a lot of attention as one of the 4 divers capable of diving deeper than 120m and is a world record and medal contender.

Prior to heading to Kalamata the first week of September, Mullins had been preparing for the world champs by training in the pool. His job and the difficult travel from New Zealand has prevented him from depth training and competing as often as he would like. Mullins chose to compete at the World championships this year, anxious to dive in the clear water of the Mediterranean.
