Royal Marine Band Visits NZ
The HM Royal Marine Band, Plymouth, is to visit NZ, performing for the first time ever with the Royal NZ Navy Band, kicking off its Asia Pacific Tour on Friday night.
The Band will play with the Royal NZ Navy Band at Auckland Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Parnell, on Friday night, Sept 27th. Director of Music for the Royal NZ Navy, Lt Commander Owen Clarke, is excited to perform with such world class musicians and says, “The tradition and history of the Royal Marine Bands are astounding. To be able to combine in performance is a thrill for our NZ Navy Band musicians.”
The world renowned drill and precision of the Royal Marine drummers will be a sight and sound to behold with the music aimed at all ages, says LT CDR Clarke. They will play a mix of modern and jazz interspersed with the traditional and classics which the military bands are famous for.
British Defence Advisor to NZ, Lt Colonel Tim Woodman, calls it an honour to be able to see one of the World’s Premiere Military Bands perform. Lt Col Woodman says,
“This multitalented group of musicians has 40 band members, playing two to three instruments each. They are also trained military medics and have been deployed on operations to places such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo and Bosnia.”
Auckland Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Dean, Jo Kelly-Moore, anticipates a great turnout for this important event and says,
“It is a great privilege for the Cathedral to host ‘Sea Songs’, an historic first, as this concert combines The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth with our own Royal New Zealand Navy Band. Excellence in musicianship and no doubt a sell-out crowd will make for a fantastic evening.”
The Band will also perform a
fundraising concert for Multiple Sclerosis New Zealand at
Westlake Boys High School on Saturday night.
Performances
will also be held in Wellington and Blenheim and Wanganui.
