Junior Rugby Excellence Recognised with Unison Medal
Friday 27 September 2012 – Junior rugby players and their families packed out the Chapman Pavilion at McLean Park yesterday to attend the Unison Medal Award ceremony.
Now in its fifth year, the Unison medal is treasured by the young players.
“These young players have been nominated by their coaches for having consistently shown great work ethic, discipline and sportsmanship, and it is a real highlight for us to see the pride and delight on their faces as they receive their medal,” said Unison Customer Relations Manager Danny Gough.
“Last year, one player was so proud of his medal, he slept with it under and his pillow, and took it to school for show and tell. Unfortunately the medal was lost during the day, and the young player was distraught.
“We were able to replace the medal, along with his smile. It’s stories like this that are the reason we are so proud to be able to support Hawke’s Bay rugby at grassroots.”
The Unison Medal Ceremony is held each year at the conclusion of the Hawke’s Bay junior rugby season. Assisted by players from the Hawke’s Bay Magpies, Mr Gough presented medals to 165 children, nominated from over 2,500 junior rugby players.
