A. J. Sharma
– ‘You Are A Traveller’
As Sharma’s
new album ‘You Are A Traveller’ journeys out now via
Powertool Records, he’s also released a special limited
edition lathe-cut 7” single through vinyl specialists Epic
Sweep Records, featuring the tracks ‘Sunshine/HMV’. As
Epic Sweep eloquently put it, “”Criminally under rated
songwriter A.J Sharma has been releasing
music since the early 1990s. Not a world away from
Alastair Galbraith’s singular vision, on
this single Sharma’s typically sparse acoustic
accompaniment is somehow taken in new more layered
directions.” Get the 7” here;
and catch him live next weekend.

Tiny Peices Of
Eight – A Musical Cry For Help
After a
two-year journey of musical rediscovery and regrowth,
Deirdre Newall is delighted to announce the
release of her first solo album “Tiny Pieces of Eight”
and a three-centre national tour.
“Tiny Pieces of Eight” will be the first recording since Delgirl. Newall is best known for her decade-long involvement with the Tui Award winning Dunedin-based group, but left two years ago to explore a different musical path. During that time, Newall has been busy with an eclectic array of musicians in no less than four different band formations: The Forty Winks, SCUD, Olabelle and Swampy, D and Five Pint, and it was these projects which lead Newall to work with many of the musicians on her latest album.
“Tiny Pieces of Eight” is a collage of songs, sounds and words made with the spicy collaborative mix of musicians that include: Grant Ramsay (Swampy), Chris Heazlewood (King Loser), Elise Allen (Skybus) and Sam Wilkinson (Von Klap). Forbes Williams, of Studio Otoitu, engineered and produced the album, which “took all of two days and nights to record and helped along by the full moon, pizza and some nasty red wine!” says Newall.
Newall puts the album in the style of Psychedelic Folk meets Hillbilly Blues meets electric sound bracket, while Radio New Zealand National host, Nick Bollinger, describes the 9-track album as “Delta Swamp Blues with a touch of improv Jazz”.
Newall is joined on tour by Ramsay and Heazlewood - who will also be performing many of their own songs - along with special guest A. J. Sharma (“You Are A Traveller” on Powertool Records). All artists will be selling their own CDs on tour, along with limited copies of “Tiny Pieces of Eight”, which reflects the collaborative nature of Newall's project and mini expedition. Meanwhile, you can sample two of the tracks on the “Tiny Pieces of Eight” Facebook page: www.facebook.com/tinypiecesof8.
