Exciting literary events for Hawke’s Bay readers
Award winning author and historian Peter Wells will be joined by curator and writer Alexa Johnston in a talk at the MTG Hawke’s Bay on Sunday 17 November, 5pm.
This session called Will the real history please stand up? is being chaired by local historian and author Keith Newman.
“The discussion will look at how writers presenting history arrive at their stories," says Carla Crosbie, Chairperson of The Writers in Wineries Charitable Trust.
"How does a researcher decide what to leave in and what to leave out? Are there elements of personal interpretation and reflection which come into play, and does that alter the slant?”
This talk is not just for history lovers but will appeal to a wide range of readers and writers and hosting history writers at the ‘HB Museum’ just made sense.
Alexa, possibly best known for her fabulous series of cookbooks Ladies, a Plate, a tribute to the skills of earlier generations of home cooks, is also the author of the authorized biography Sir Edmund Hillary An Extraordinary Life.
In a second event Alexa will discuss her latest cookbook Jams and Preserves. Ladies, a Plate morning tea with Alexa Johnston will be held at Havelock North retirement village Summerset in the Vines on Monday 18 November 10am.
“We wanted to bring Alexa together with some of the very people who perhaps used these recipes in their younger days – it’s not often an event like this is made so accessible to our young at heart residents. It will be a great reminiscence for many.”
Tickets are available from Beattie and Forbes Bookshop, Napier Libraries and Hastings District Libraries. For more information see www.hbreadersandwriters.co.nz
