Cameron signs up for Woodstock Fight for Life

JUST when David Tua and Joseph Parker thought they had a free reign at the top of the New Zealand heavyweight landscape to orchestrate things they way they want, along comes boxing’s ‘Comeback Kid’ – Shane Cameron.

The Mountain Warrior today signed up for December’s Woodstock Fight for Life marking a return to the ring for the first time in 13 months and, even more appetisingly, he’s coming back as a heavyweight.

“That will set the cat amongst the pigeons,” said Woodstock Fight for Life icon, Duco Events promoter Dean Lonergan.

“Shane Cameron back as a heavyweight opens up all sorts of possibilities when it comes to match-ups with Joseph Parker and David Tua.

“Make no mistake about it, Shane leaving the cruiserweight division means we are smack bang in the middle of the golden age of heavyweight boxing in this country.”

Given Cameron’s knack of the comeback, no one should be surprised by his return to the ranks of the heavyweights.

Many had his career written off for good when Tua destroyed him in the 2009 Fight of the Century inside of two rounds.

After dusting himself off, he stepped back inside the ropes to defeat John Hopoate in the top division before beginning a cruiser-weight career which saw him defeat three Australian opponents before his extraordinary knockout of American heavyweight Monte Barrett in July last year.

That result saw him win the respect of IBO cruiserweight world champion Danny Green who would go on to defeat Cameron in their title fight in Melbourne in November.

“Shane did a hell of a job resurrecting his career after the loss against Tua,” said Lonergan.

“That he could go from Tua to fighting for a world title is nothing short of miraculous.

“Now he has the chance to do the same as a heavyweight because there’s no doubt he is at his best when he fights around 95 and 98kgs – right where he was when he knocked out Barrett.

“He proved that night, at that weight, that he belongs in the heavyweight division because he has the power to get it done.”

An opponent for Cameron (36) at the Woodstock Fight for Life at Auckland’s Trusts Arena on December 14th is expected to be announced within the next week.

What is certain is that New Zealanders are sure to watch Cameron on Sky Television’s pay-per-view platform.

He is NZ boxing’s most successful pay-per-view boxer having generated more ‘buys’ than Tua, Parker and Sonny Bill Williams.

His bouts against Tua, Barrett and Monty Betham (in a Fight for Life exhibition bout in 2011) have him clear at the top of the field.

Said Lonergan: “Kiwis love Shane because he always comes to fight. And he’s always entertaining. That’s the perfect mix for pay-per-view.”
