In A.R. Gurney's Pulitzer Prize nominated play, nearly half a century passes in the course of a single day in the most singular of rooms - where people gather, meals are eaten, conversations begin, and generations converge. The Dining Room chronicles the American Family and the keeping and breaking of traditions. In what has been described as "a seamless collection of moments," the show presents a spectrum of glimpses into the human condition: the joys, sorrows, love and comedy that accompany family life. The scenes, which range from the comic to the serious, explore the dynamic relationships of family life.
"…often funny and rueful and, by the end, very moving." —NY Times.
DIRECTORS VIEW
Julia has long been involved with all things theatrical and started acting some 35 years ago. Having worked on stage, back stage and on the left and right of stage she is happy to be now working where she is most at home – out the front. Julia has been lucky enough to have won awards for both directing and acting, and most recently was delighted to be awarded the AMI/ ACTT Theatre Award as Best Director for her work with The Laramie Project also at ETS. Ellerslie has always been very generous to Julia, especially allowing her to direct her very first show – Roger Hall’s By Degrees approximately a decade ago and she is looking forward to working again with this dynamic society. Julia has also been fortunate enough to have had professional work in television, short films and numerous television commercials.
“Having played Actress Number One in an independent production of The Dining Room some 24 (!) years ago I have always wanted to direct this fascinating piece of theatre and was therefore delighted when approached by the committee of ETS to do exactly that!” says Julia.
