Government boost to take WOW international

Speaking at a function in Wellington to celebrate a partnership with World of WearableArt (WOW), the Prime Minister has tonight announced the Government’s commitment to investing in activities that deliver tangible benefits to New Zealand.

With funding from the Major Events Development Fund, the Government will support three key World of WearableArt Ltd initiatives:

Three international touring exhibitions, to be staged at museums in Asia, Europe and North America;

An international education programme, including opportunities for international design students to enter the competition and a focus on attracting international students to study in New Zealand; and
Opportunities for international business representatives to be hosted, both at the main event in Wellington and at the touring exhibitions.

WOW Founder Dame Suzie Moncrieff said that the Government’s investment represented great recognition of the dedication of many people who have worked on the event and design competition over the last 25 years.

“Celebrating the World of WearableArt event on a global stage and presenting a taste of the WOW experience around the world is the realisation of a dream come true. We are excited to be able to share the creativity and inspiration that WOW generates.”

Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce said it was important New Zealand championed this iconic brand and that its uniqueness remains part of our nation’s intellectual property.

“As New Zealanders, we are a pioneering, open and collaborative nation. This plays to our character, our strengths and represents the way we are viewed internationally.

The $900,000 investment covers a three year period until 2016.

In 2013, WOW show was attended by over 47,000 people.
