New Group 1 Winner for NZ Ready to Run

New Group 1 Winner for NZ Ready to Run

Less than one year after being purchased from New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale, Atlante (Fastnet Rock) is the Sale’s newest Group 1 winner after a decisive all-the-way victory in the $400,000 SOTHYS 41st New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton on Saturday.

Atlante wins the Group 1 SOTHYS 41st New Zealand 2000 Guineas at Riccarton.

Trained by the Murray Baker/Anderw Forsman partnership, the son of Fastnet Rock started the race as favourite following his last start victory on the same course two weeks prior in similar fashion, leading from start to finish.

Jumping from barrier three, Atlante worked to the lead easily for Opie Bosson and was able to dictate the pace of the race to his liking from there.

As the field entered the straight on a Good 3 track at Riccarton, Atlante appeared to be headed, first by Sacred Park (NZ) (Thorn Park) and then by Chambord (NZ) (Zabeel), as he hung outwards in the straight.

The three-year-old colt rallied bravely and wrangled the lead back from Karaka graduate Chambord and drew away again at the line to win by three-quarters of a length from Chambord with another Karaka graduate Gobi Ranger (Tale of the Cat) running into third a further half length behind.

Evergreen kiwi-bred galloper Precedence (NZ) (Zabeel) produced a superior staying effort to succeed in the Group 3 A$300,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington on Saturday after narrowly missing out on a start in the Melbourne Cup earlier in the week.

With 24 runners in the field for the Melbourne Cup the Bart and James Cummings trained horse was balloted out as the 25 horse in the order of entry for Australia’s showpiece event.

The eight-year-old gelding was coming off a resounding victory in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup on Cox Plate day and started as the second favourite for Saturday’s race.

The son of Zabeel was once again ridden by Craig Williams, who was aboard at his last start victory, and positioned the gelding close to the pace over the testing 2600m distance.

Entering the long Flemington straight Precedence appeared to be travelling comfortably but it was quickly apparent that he would have a fight on his hand when race-favourite Sertorius (Galileo) went to the lead.

The tough kiwi stayer overhauled the race-favourite in the concluding stages with the winning margin a slender nose. A protest from the second horse was survived after it was claimed Precedence laid-in and interfered with Sertorius however Stewards dismissed the appeal and Precedence was crowned the victor.

Trained by Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes, the five-year-old mare has been seen racing between the stables Melbourne and Sydney stable lately, finishing runner-up at her last start in Sydney after running fifth in the Group 2 Rose Kingston Stakes at Flemington fresh up this campaign.

After drawing a difficult barrier of 10 in the 16-horse field for rider Dwayne Dunn, Karaka graduate Girl Gone Rockin’ found a nice position around mid-field and one horse off the rail.

It looked as though leaders Queenstown (Stratum) and Keep de Rose (NZ) (Keeper) had a winning break but over the last 100m Girl Gone Rockin’ really dug deep to hit top gear and put her nose in front on the finishing line.

Fellow Karaka graduate Keep de Rose fought on well and finished in third position only half a length from the winner.

It was the six-year-old gelding’s first start since January of this year where he was unplaced in the Group 1 Thorndon Mile at Trentham for trainer Stephen Marsh and owners Go Racing.

On Saturday the son of Savabeel was ridden by apprentice jockey Alex Forbes who positioned the horse in second spot outside the leader over the 1200m sprint journey on a Good 3 track.

It was a solid pace set by fellow Karaka graduate Eight Shillings (NZ) (O’Reilly) and the pair skipped away from the field to fight out the race in the straight. Savour the Moment overpowered Eight Shillings over the final stages of the race to win by a long neck in slick time of 1.09.01.
